Inspiring Bathroom Styles for Your Coastal Home

by Floor Authority

When you think of a coastal bathroom, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the beautiful beach view or floor to ceiling windows that brighten up your bathroom. It’s true; these two elements are key for creating an atmosphere of tranquility in your coastal bathroom.

Beach views are easy to come by in any part of the world when you live near an ocean. But if you're not lucky enough to have one nearby, there are ways to bring this natural element into your space without having one in real life! For example, using various shades of blues or wooden panels with seashells on them can give off that same feel as looking out at an actual beach from inside your home.

Another way is through floor-to-ceiling windows—they help create an airy feeling while still allowing light and fresh air flow throughout the room through open windows and doors. They also enhance natural light coming from outside so they can make even small bathrooms appear larger than they actually are!

The best thing about a coastal themed bathroom is that they are so adaptable. You can use a variety of materials, colors, accessories and styles to create your ideal bathroom.

  • Materials: From tile to wood to stone—the world is your oyster when it comes to choices in materials for your bathroom.
  • Colors: There’s something for everyone when it comes to color schemes for coastal bathrooms! You can choose from traditional neutrals or go bolder with bright blues and greens. The best way to incorporate colors is through the use of accessories like towels or rugs that match the color scheme.
  • Accessories: The options are endless when it comes to accessories like bathmats, hand towels and even lighting fixtures that will help make your home look as though it belongs on the beachfront.

Flooring Materials

First, let’s start by discussing the best flooring options for your bathroom. The two best options would be tile and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) as they are best suitable for high traffic and heavy moisture areas.

Tile

Tile is a very common choice for bathrooms as it is waterproof, long-lasting, and cost effective. What is great about tile is that it comes in a variety of colors and is perfect for humidity prone spaces. Not to mention, tile is very eco-friendly which can reduce energy usage and it’s also hypoallergenic which eliminates trapping allergens and dust like some other flooring materials do. This flooring is durable and easy to clean, making it perfect for high-traffic areas like bathrooms. There are two different options to choose from when looking at tile. Porcelain tile and ceramic tile.

Porcelain tile has a tougher build and a greater durability than ceramic tile varieties. The reason being is that it is fired at a higher temperature and is made from a more refined clay. Ceramic tile on the other hand, is fired at a lower temperature making the tile more porous, softer, and not as dense as porcelain. Although ceramic tile isn’t as durable as porcelain, it is the more affordable choice. The reason being is that it is more absorbent to water, susceptible to scratching and chipping.

Both porcelain and ceramic tiles offer a glazed and unglazed option. Glazed tiles have a larger selection of color options but is more vulnerable to stains and scratches. Unglazed tiles are more slip resistant and are also a sought-out option for their scratch resistant surface and natural earthly coloring.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Luxury vinyl plank is one of the most popular flooring materials for many homes. It is an ideal selection for any space in your home as it is waterproof, durable, and easy to maintain. The great thing about LVP is because it is a synthetic material, it can be used to imitate the look of natural wood, stone, or tile with a wide variety of styles and finishes. This allows for a high-end look that can add resale value to your home without having to break the bank. LVP flooring can last up to 25 years with the correct care and maintenance and are designed to withstand everyday wear and tear!

Colors

For a coastal bathroom style, you should use colors that perceive a beachy vibe. You want to choose colors that are different shades of blue, green or neutral such as beige and white. The best way to pick a color is to decide if you would like the wall to be the pop of color or if you would like the accessories to be the pop of color. If you are a person that likes to change it up every so often, using accessories as your main color source would be the way to go! For example, if your bathroom has white walls and beige floors, try using blue towels or blue decorations in order to give some visual interest in the room.

Coastal Color Palette

Another great way to incorporate color is with a tile wall or backsplash. A tile wall is a great choice for your bathroom as it is easy to clean and can be used to create a wall mural that will prove both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Tile provides many shapes, sizes and colors to make designing your coastal themed bathroom a breeze. If you’re looking for a bit of luxury in your coastal home, marble floors are an excellent option that can easily be integrated into any bathroom style design. Marble floors can be both beautiful and functional depending on where they’re used – think about installing marble tiles around your bathtub or even underfoot in one section of your shower area!
